The Direct Bus from Tirana Airport to Shkodër
This is the option most travellers want and the one many outdated guides miss. Hermes Aeroport Shkodër runs a direct shuttle between Tirana International Airport (Rinas) and central Shkodër with departures spread around the clock - currently about a dozen each way per day, including overnight runs timed for early and late flights. The ride takes 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic (allow up to 3 in peak summer).
Price: 1,000 lek (~€10) for daytime departures, 1,300 lek (~€13) for night and early-morning runs. Pay cash to the driver or at the office; bring lek or small euro notes.
Where it stops: at the airport, outside the terminal; in Shkodër, at the Hermes office on Rruga Marin Biçikemi, a few hundred metres from the main square - and about a five-minute walk from NÓS Albania.
Timetables change - more departures were added recently and third-party sites often show old times. Check the current schedule and book on the official Hermes Aeroport Shkodër site (they also take WhatsApp bookings) before you fly.
Finding the Bus at the Airport - and What If You Land Late?
The Hermes shuttle waits in the parking area just outside the arrivals exit - if in doubt, ask at the information desk for the "Shkodra bus" and someone will point you to it. Luggage goes under the bus at no extra charge. If your flight is delayed past a departure you planned for, the around-the-clock schedule means the wait for the next bus is rarely more than a couple of hours - but for arrivals between roughly midnight and five in the morning, decide in advance whether you would rather wait for a night bus (1,300 lek) or have a pre-booked transfer holding your name at arrivals. After a long flight with kids and bags, most people are glad they chose the transfer.
Which Option Should You Choose?
- Solo traveller or couple, daytime arrival - the direct Hermes airport bus. Cheap, simple, drops you in the centre.
- Family with luggage, or landing after 22:00 - pre-booked private transfer or hotel pick-up. The €70 splits well between four people and beats juggling bags at 1 a.m.
- Already staying in Tirana - the city bus from the North-South terminal. At 400-500 lek it is one of the cheapest two-hour rides in Europe.
- Planning to explore beyond Shkodër by road - rent a car at the airport. The lakeside villages, Mesi Bridge and Velipoja beach all become easy, though for Theth most visitors still prefer a guided 4x4 day trip over driving the mountain road themselves.
- On the Theth-Valbona hiking circuit - airport bus to Shkodër, overnight in the city, then the early tour pick-up. Do not try to reach Theth directly from the airport in one day; you will regret the rush.
The City Bus: Tirana North-South Terminal to Shkodër
If you are already in Tirana, intercity buses and minibuses leave the North-South bus terminal (Terminali i Autobusëve të Veriut dhe të Jugut, next to the Casa Italia shopping centre on the Kamëz side of the city) every 30-60 minutes through the day - first departures early in the morning, last around 17:30-18:00. The fare is 400-500 lek in cash and the trip takes around two hours.
Note that the terminal is about 5 km from Skanderbeg Square - not walkable. The Luna/Rinas Express airport shuttle (400 lek, hourly, 24/7) and the city's ride-hailing apps cover the gap cheaply. If you are landing at the airport, though, skip Tirana entirely: the direct Hermes bus saves you the detour.
Arriving in Shkodër: intercity buses stop street-side on Bulevardi Bujar Bishanaku near the Migjeni Theater - there is no enclosed bus station, but you step off essentially in the city centre, a short walk from the pedestrian zone and most accommodation. Exact stops vary slightly by company.
Taxi and Private Transfer
The official airport taxi rate to Shkodër is roughly €70-75 for the ~80 km trip (about 1.5 hours). For two or more people arriving late, splitting a transfer is often worth it over waiting for a night bus. Worth knowing: Uber and Bolt do not operate in Albania - at the airport you will use the official taxi rank or a pre-booked transfer, and in cities locals use apps like UPs and Speed Taxi. Driving Yourself
The drive is straightforward: take the A1 motorway out of Tirana (the Thumanë-Kashar segment carries Albania's newer toll - 250 lek, about €2.50), then the toll-free SH1 north through Milot and Lezha to Shkodër. It is 95-100 km and takes 1.5-2 hours in normal traffic; summer weekend traffic toward the coast can stretch it to three. Rental cars in Tirana start around €15-25 per day outside peak season. Free private parking matters more than you think in central Shkodër in August - choose accommodation that has it.
Is There a Train from Tirana to Shkodër?
No - and as of this writing there are no scheduled passenger trains anywhere in Albania. The Tirana-Durrës line is being rebuilt with reopening currently projected for 2027, and the old Shkodër services stopped years ago. Any site selling you a "train to Shkodër" is out of date. Bus, transfer or car are the real options.

This direction worries people most, and it is exactly why the Hermes overnight departures exist: buses leave Shkodër for the airport in the small hours (night fare 1,300 lek), timed for early-morning flights.
