What Are the Albanian Alps?

Known locally as Alpet Shqiptare or the Bjeshket e Namuna (Accursed Mountains), this range stretches across northern Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro. With peaks over 2,600m and untouched valleys, it is one of the wildest regions in Europe.

Getting There from Shkodra

  • Theth - 85 km, approx. 2.5 hrs by 4x4
  • Valbona - via Koman Lake ferry (approx. 4 hrs)
  • Vermosh - 110 km north, near the Montenegrin border

Best Hikes

The most famous hike is the Theth to Valbona trail over the Valbona Pass (1,793m) - 16 km, rated moderate-to-difficult with extraordinary views. Easier options include the Blue Eye of Theth and Grunas Waterfall.

Best Time to Visit

The Alps are accessible from June to October. Late June or September offer quieter trails and perfect hiking weather.
