The best day trips from Shkodra read like a highlight reel of northern Albania: an alpine village at the end of a mountain road, a ferry through a canyon that gets compared to Norwegian fjords, a river so clear it has earned the nickname "the Thailand of Albania", plus beaches, Ottoman bridges and even another country before lunch. 1. Theth National Park
Theth is arguably the most beautiful village in Albania: stone houses and a wooden church scattered across a valley floor, walled in by the peaks of the Accursed Mountains. The road from Shkodra is now asphalted the whole way, so in summer a normal car makes it in around two hours; in the colder months snow can still close the pass, which is one reason a local driver is worth having. Once there, the walk to the Blue Eye of Theth, the Grunas Waterfall and the historic Lock-in Tower fills a day perfectly. 2. The Lake Koman Ferry
The Lake Koman ferry is the trip guests ask us about most, and it earns the hype. For two to three hours the boat threads a flooded canyon of sheer cliffs, hidden side valleys and emerald water; travel writers reach for fjord comparisons, and for once they are not exaggerating. Boats leave Koman in the morning, the dock is about an hour and a half from Shkodra, and seats genuinely fill up in July and August. The logistics of tickets, transfers and return timing are the fiddly part, which is why most of our guests let the tour desk arrange the whole day.
3. Shala River
Locals call the Shala River the Thailand of Albania, and the photos do look implausible: turquoise water, white pebble beaches and wooden river restaurants at the foot of the mountains. It is reached by boat across Lake Koman, which keeps the crowds modest and makes it feel like a small expedition. Trips run from roughly June to September while the boats operate, and a long lazy lunch by the water is half the point. Combine an early ferry, a Shala swim and a riverside meal and you have one of the best single days in the Balkans.
4. The Theth to Valbona Loop
The classic Alps adventure links everything above into one loop: drive to Theth, hike over the Valbona Pass at 1,793 metres, descend into the Valbona valley and return by ferry across Lake Koman. The hike itself is around 16 km and rated moderate to difficult; the views from the pass are the finest in the country. Most hikers do it over two days. 5. Mesi Bridge and Drisht Castle
Not every great trip needs a dawn start. About 8 km from the city stands the Mesi Bridge, an elegant 18th century Ottoman stone bridge arching over the clear green Kir river, one of the finest of its kind in Albania. Pair it with the hilltop ruins and village of Drisht Castle a little further on and you have a perfect half day by taxi or, for the energetic, by bicycle. Neither charged an entry fee when we last checked, and you will often have both nearly to yourself.
6. Velipoja Beach and the Buna Delta
When the summer heat peaks, Shkodra locals head to Velipoja, a wide sandy Adriatic beach about 30 km south of the city where the Buna river meets the sea. The water is shallow and family friendly, the seafood is fresh, and the protected Buna delta next door is full of birdlife. It makes an easy half day, or a full beach day in July and August. 7. Ulcinj, Montenegro
Only about 45 minutes by car through the Muriqan border crossing, Ulcinj gives you a second country in a day: a walled old town above the sea, beaches that stretch for kilometres and excellent seafood. Bring your passport, check your rental car paperwork allows the crossing, and make a long lunch of it. Coming back to Shkodra for the evening xhiro after a morning in Montenegro never stops feeling slightly surreal.
Planning Tips from the Tour Desk
- Start early. The ferry and Shala days depend on morning boats; departures wait for nobody.
- Book ahead in July and August. Ferry seats and Shala boats really do sell out in high season.
- Carry cash. Mountain villages, river restaurants and ferry docks rarely take cards.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I do Theth in one day from Shkodra?
Yes. With the asphalted road, a day trip leaves time for the Blue Eye and the waterfall. Our guided tour does exactly this in around eleven hours, door to door.
Do I still need a 4x4 to reach Theth?
In summer, no: the road is paved and a normal car makes it. From late autumn to spring, snow and ice can close the route, so ask us about conditions before you commit.
How do I do the Lake Koman ferry from Shkodra?
Reach the Koman dock for the morning departure, cruise the canyon, and either return the same way or continue toward Valbona. Transfers and tickets are the awkward part on your own; arranged through the tour desk it becomes a simple, spectacular day.
Is the Shala River open all year?
No. The boats run roughly June to September. Outside those months the river is still there, but the day trip infrastructure is not.
I have one free day. Which trip should I pick?
In summer, Shala River for scenery you cannot get elsewhere. In spring or autumn, Theth. If you would rather stay close, Mesi Bridge plus Drisht fills a relaxed half day.
