Lake Shkodra at a Glance

Lake Shkodra (Liqeni i Shkodres) covers 370-530 sq km and sits on the Albania-Montenegro border. It is the largest lake in the Balkans.

Wildlife

The lake is a designated nature reserve and one of the most important bird habitats in Europe. Over 280 bird species have been recorded, including Dalmatian pelicans, herons and cormorants.

Things to Do

  • Boat tours - glide through reed-lined channels. Best at sunrise or sunset.
  • Cycling - a scenic 8 km route from Shkodra to the village of Shiroka.
  • Swimming - the village of Shiroka has a small beach popular in summer.
  • Fishing - guided trips can be arranged from Shkodra.
