Why Visit Shkodra?
Shkodra (or Shkoder) is the cultural capital of northern Albania and one of the oldest cities in the Balkans. With a vibrant arts scene, stunning natural surroundings and warm local hospitality, it deserves far more time on your itinerary than most travellers give it.
1. Rozafa Castle
Perched on a hill above the confluence of three rivers, Rozafa Castle is the city's most iconic landmark. Walk the ancient walls and enjoy panoramic views over Shkodra, Lake Shkodra and the Albanian Alps. Entry costs around 3 EUR and the site is open year-round.
2. Lake Shkodra
At 370 sq km, Lake Shkodra is the largest lake in the Balkans. Take a boat tour through channels lined with water lilies, spot pelicans and herons, or cycle along the peaceful lakeside path from the city.
3. The Historic Bazaar
Stroll along Rruga Kole Idromeno, Shkodra's main pedestrian boulevard, lined with colourful mansions, cafes and local artisan shops. The old bazaar is perfect for handmade crafts and traditional Albanian products.
4. Marubi National Museum of Photography
Housed in a beautifully restored Ottoman-era building, Marubi Museum holds over 500,000 glass-plate negatives documenting Albanian life since 1858.
5. Day Trips to the Albanian Alps
Shkodra is the gateway to the Albanian Alps. From here you can organise full-day tours to Theth, Valbona and the Komani Lake ferry.
